Up until a few months ago, I was buying oat and almond milks from the supermarket, and then I discovered that you can make your own! Homemade is so much better for you as they are free from stabilisers and emulsifiers that are added to shop-bought dairy free milks.
I make oat milk most frequently, as I find it's the cheapest milk to make - almond milk is dreamy and delicious, but I find almonds quite expensive so I make almond milk as a treat from time to time.
Oat milk is perfect in smoothies, granolas, porridge etc, but I wouldn't recommend in your tea or coffee!
You will need:
200g oats
Optional sweeteners - honey, maple syprup, date syrup
Filtered water
Method:
Soak the oats for 30 minutes, and then drain and rinse.
Put the oats in a blender with about 900ml of filtered water.
Blend well until smooth - usually 30 seconds to a minute is all that is needed.
If you want to sweeten your milk then add a sweetener at this point and blend again. I personally don't bother, as I only use oat milk for smoothies, so find it gets sweetened with the fruit I use in the smoothie.
Pour the blended oats through a fine sieve and push through with a spoon or spatula. Discard the pulp.
Use a funnel to decant into air tight bottles.
It will keep in the fridge for 4-5 days.
